Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The commencement of direct flights between Addis Ababa and Madrid, Spain by the Ethiopian Airlines will contribute for investment and tourism growth in Ethiopia, Ethiopian CEO, Tewolde Gebremaryam said.
Madrid, a seat for World Tourism Organization is also a huge source of tourists. Because of this, the tri-weekly flight will benefit Ethiopia in various areas, the CEO said.
“The commencement of this direct flight to Madrid will have various importances. Addis Ababa is home for continental and international organizations, so many people visit the country. This service will help to increase number of visitors; particularly tourists to the country thereby contribute for the growth of the country.”
Spanish Ambassador to Ethiopia Miguel Fernandez-Palacios for his part said the commencement of the direct service demonstrates the growing tie between the two countries.
It could be a reason for not only Spanish tourists but also investors to look to Ethiopia, he added.
“I have been working more than two years to have this flight. I think today is historical day for Ethiopian Airlines but also for the relation between Spain and Ethiopia. I think this flight will strengthen bilateral relations more Spanish tourists will fly to Ethiopia also Addis Ababa will be the new hub for Spanish tourist and also businessmen. The world goes to Africa.”
In addition to boost bilateral relationship, the service will have great impact on the country’s tourism sector, said Ethiopian Ambassador to France and Representative to UNESCO, Nega Tsegaye.
“Direct flights have great impacts in increasing the opportunity of investors’ travel between the two countries and increase tourist flow. The World Tourism Exhibition to be held in 2014 in Spain and France will be a good opportunity to create links between Ethiopian and other countries’ tour operators.”
Ethiopian Tourism Organization CEO Solomon Tadese for his part said the impact of the Ethiopian Airlines’ initiative to expanding destination is not only economic. It also helps to build image of the nation.
It will contribute a lot to attract more European tourists thereby improving the tourism sector, he added.
Ethiopian Airlines launched the tri-weekly direct flight to Madrid, its 10th destination in Europe, on 2 September 2014.
The service is expected to provide Ethiopian’s passengers to Africa and Europe a wider alternative.
Established in 1945, Ethiopian is flying to 83 destinations worldwide and 20 domestic destinations.
