Ethiopia’s Shumi Dechasa won Sunday’s Hamburg Marathon in 2hr 06min 44sec, just ahead of Kenya’s Eric Ndjema and Philemon Rono in cool temperatures.
“It was certainly not a very fast race, but I definitely wanted to finally win,” said Dechasa who ran a personal best, having finished fourth in Hamburg two years ago.
Former world record holder Haile Gebrselassie had been forced to withdraw from the marathon last month after suffering from a pollen allergy.
In the women’s race, Kenya’s Georgina Rono crossed the line in a winning time of 2:26:47.
